The term Lateral Filing Drawer is really a misnomer, these are a 900 wide filing drawer.  The lateral reference is used to describe where files are stored east to west in the drawer.  At four levels high a four drawer 900 wide cabinet actually stores less than two standard four drawer filing cabinets and requires the same footprint. 

Lateral Filing Drawers are available in two, three and four level configurations with files being stored east to west (across the drawer) or north to south (from the front to the back of the drawer).
